To me, working with a band in any capacity means I stake my name and passion on advancing an artist's career. And in order for me to successfully sell an artist, I have to love the music and get what the artist is trying to do; anything less than that, and I can't give 110% of myself to the job.
With most publicists, you get a cookie-cutter PR campaign; no frills, no personal touches, just the basics. I go more than the extra mile in helping my clients. To begin, I offer bio and onesheet writing/creation at no additional charge*; after all, it's in my best interest as well to put out the most appealing, attention-grabbing promo kit I can, right? Plus, with a Masters' in creative writing, I've found I'm one hell of a bio writer.
Next, working with the artist, I hand-pick outlets for the music. I take care to make my packages stand out: spray-painting stencils on the envelope, hand-writing the artist name and information on the outside, writing a personal note to recipients along with the onesheet, CD and cover letter. In addition to the usual follow up—through a combination of mail, email and phone calls, we ensure the artist's name reaches its targets a minimum of five times, to make it stick—I continually look for additional opportunities for exposure/income. I'll pass along ideas/contacts for shows/booking, licensing, radio. I'll give industry advice when asked and as able.
And my rate is cheaper than most independent music publicists. While I have separate rates for new release and tour publicity, I will include concurrent tour promo in the new release rate at no additional charge. Of course, expenses (printing, postage and envelopes, basically) are additional; I invoice the first month upfront and then monthly thereafter.
