After teaming up with producer/guitarist Brad Mitcho, the band soon found itself as a finalist in a nationwide contest sponsored by fellow Tulsans Hanson. The first incarnation of RadioRadio made its debut shortly thereafter on the main stage of dFest 2006. With more performances and an end-of-the-year live DVD filmed by Ash Greyson (Hanson Strong Enough to Break), RadioRadio was well on its way. So far, so good.
By April 2007, riding the strength of the single "Marathon," RadioRadio was invited by Z104.5 The Edge to play The Edge Birthday Bash in Tulsa with a reunited Gravity Kills. As fate would have it, this would be the last show for three-fifths of the band. Frustrated, Greg and Paul found themselves at square one, back to the days of the desolate parking lot. How strong was their belief in RadioRadio?
Lucky for us, that answer was "plenty," and as new players were recruited-Paul Sanders (drums) and Jay Hunt (guitar)-RadioRadio v.2.0 debuted at the PLAY:stl Festival in September 2007 and has been forward-looking ever since. Following an official slot at the 2008 South by Southwest music conference, the four have been hard at work crafting a follow-up release, the tightly knit EP Alarm 1, Alarm 2.
Says Greg, "This time around, the songs were crafted from the garage up. Though the main impetus for a song may originate from a single source, every band member is vested in the arrangement. These songs become our common experience; our common anguish and our common glory."
As for RadioRadio's goals, Greg is quick to respond: "To slay 'em all. To have real moxie to be what no ProTools system or media-savvy management or hyper-networked MySpace page can substitute for: greatness in content, style and attitude."
No small order, that. But then again, after all they've been through and how far they've come, RadioRadio can do anything they put their creative minds to. Like the Elvis Costello song from which its name is taken, RadioRadio is about embracing independence and free will...all in a manner you can dance to.
