The Mirror Stage
|
Before
The Mirror Stage began
quietly, in the experimental electronic music laboratory at Washington
University in St. Louis. Surrounded by ten-foot long Moogs, his professor's
handmade modular synths, and a myriad of hi-tech virtual noisemakers, with pen
in hand James began the process of assembling the songs that would become Ten
Thousand Tongues and dozens of others as yet unheard. He formed a band with
a couple of classmates and they spent days recreating Kid A and Yankee
Hotel Foxtrot. They played their guitars through laptops, made beats out of
modular Arps, and added Mellotron out of homage to My Bloody Valentine. It
didn't last much past graduation, but the songs kept humming to the surface and
the evocative name stuck.

The EP is not a typical first effort. Blending contrapuntal
composition with intricate lyrics, the epic songs expand on each listen. The Mirror Stage draws its sound equally from TV on the Radio's dense cacaphony,
Steve Reich's composed Minimalism, and Bob Dylan’s prophetic lyricism.
